Koshkonong

History

In 1886 the first Mercantile was built in Koshkonong by J.M Tim on the Corner of Luyster and Diggins. After the first business many others followed, the town had many businesses a huge down town.

Koshkonong got a bank and along with the bank came robberies the bank was reported to been robbed 2 times the first time was 1908 November Friday 13th The Robbers attempted to blow the vault with dynamite. The Second robbery date is unknown but it is report to taken place while the cashier was on lunch he was in the bank alone when the three robbers came in. They forced him into the vault and got away with $2,572.00. One of the Robbers was caught and sentenced. The other two were never caught it was reported that they later died of Tuberculosis. The Bank Stands Abandon today.

Koshkonong even had a nice airport it was built in 1935 and dedicated in July 4th with an Air show it was reported that day you could see 25 to 30 planes flying and they were offering plane rides. Harry Truman Also attended the dedication. The Airport today is a ranch.

Koshkonong bad luck seem to start with the fires in 1916 was the first big fire it started at 4:00am it is to believed to have started from spark from the Rail road. After they believed they got the fire out the fire had take its toll and burnt down 3 businesses a home and the Masonic hall. Then again at 8:00 am fire alarm again! The fire had re ignited itself. Before getting the fire extinguished it had taken 2 more homes. Another fire happen an in 1923 Milling Company burn its a total lost the fire is believe to be from the Rail Road. 1924 this time fire believed to been started from small stove in barber shop. Damage is unknown. 1926 Fire destroys the brick school cause is unknown. Then 1938 half block burned, started from explosion of kerosene from stove under hot water heater.

Another one of Koshkonong reported bad luck is the south rail road crossing in 1972 the third person was killed while crossing the other two were killed in the 20's. If this is the crossing I know of you have to be careful of it to this day! There are gates but they don't always work right sometimes they go down when there isn't a train. One time they went up when a train was half way through then went back down. So if you're going to go through this spot do like we do spot and look!

Another of Koshkonong bad luck was 1933 cyclone struck surrounding area and many residents were injured. Then in 1937 there was a freak hail storm which destroyed the peach crop this is what brought the end to the peaches and to Koshkonong. Over the next decade because of insects, climate changes and neglect to tree's it lead to the collapse of the peach industry.

Koshkonong had a cheese plant come in though the plant thrive for more then a decade it closed permanently in 1955.

Were the Peach Tree's once stood in 1970 became grape vines. They would use young people from around the area to harvest the grapes then they would be shipped to St. Louis to be made to wine. Because of Climate and Neglect this to did not last long.

Now what was once peaches and Grapes is cow pastures. What was once a busy Koshkonong with people always moving around is now an empty town with empty buildings waiting to fall in. Its hard to walk around Koshkonong and look at all the dreams that use to be there. And look at all the dreams that had been lost or maybe all the dreams that been filled. I find it sad looking at all the empty buildings in Koshkonong.
